The Permanent Parliamentary Infrastructure Committee is satisfied with the progress made on the construction of the modern railway project – SGR, after completing a two-day tour from Dodoma to Dar es Salaam from March 14 to 15, 2023.
The Chairperson of the Infrastructure Parliamentary Committee, Hon. Selemani Kakoso, expressed satisfaction with the progress made on the Morogoro – Makutupora section, which has reached over 82% completion, and the Dar es Salaam – Morogoro section, which has reached over 97% completion. The remaining major work is the construction of the railway towards the port of Dar es Salaam.
“I am satisfied with the progress of the project, and I congratulate the Ministry and TRC for the great work you have done. When you submit your applications to the Ministry, I promise that we, together with the MPs who have seen this work, will pass it without hindering the President,” said Hon. Kakoso.
Hon. Kakoso emphasized, “We have inspected from Dodoma to Morogoro, and finally arrived in Dar es Salaam. I congratulate the Government for the work it has done in building modern railway infrastructure. We have seen the Government’s commitment, and we are satisfied.”
In addition, the Committee also visited the Train Heads Workshop in Morogoro to assess its performance and advise the Government on how to improve work efficiency in the workshop to enhance transport services by rail and promote the economy.
“We have inspected the railway workshop that repairs and manufactures train heads in Morogoro, and today we have inspected the railway. Indeed, infrastructure is being built, and I assure the public that the construction has reached a very good stage,” said Kakoso.
Deputy Minister of Transport Hon. Atupele Mwakibete, who accompanied the Committee on the tour, thanked the Committee and said that, on behalf of the Minister of Construction and Transport, he received instructions and advice, including the issue of carriages and train heads, which is being addressed, with train heads expected to arrive by April 2023 to start the transport service from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro.
“I take this opportunity to thank the parliamentary infrastructure committee for visiting our railway company, but also for their opinions, which they have often given, and the Government has been working on them. I congratulate all employees and the Chairperson of the Board and the Director-General of TRC for good management,” said Prof. John Kondoro, Chairman of the TRC Board of Directors.
The Committee has advised the Government to increase the pace of project completion, create an environment to hire workers who will operate the project, oversee the procurement of equipment including machinery, carriages, and train heads, and urged the Ministry of Construction and Transport to cooperate with the Ministry of Energy to ensure a reliable energy supply that will enable activities to be carried out smoothly.
