Sustainable Development: Luena and Saurimo Will Be Connected by Rail
The construction of this Luena – Saurimo section is part of the PDNSTIR and also meets the Expansion Plan of the National Railway Network.
The capitals of the provinces of Moxico (Luena) and Luanda-Sul (Saurimo) will be connected by 260 kilometers of railway line to boost sustainable development and optimize resources in the region.
The construction of this Luena – Saurimo section is included in the National Master Plan for the Transport and Road Infrastructure Sector (PDNSTIR) and also complies with the Expansion Plan for the National Railway Network, which has enabled the implementation of a set of measures and policies that aim to improve rail transport, the volume of goods and the number of passengers carried.
For the execution of the aforementioned railway connection, in accordance with Presidential Order No. 55/23 of March 27 of the current year, the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, authorizes the sum of 1,168,405,370.00 (one thousand, one hundred sixty-eight million, four hundred and five thousand, three hundred and seventy dollars).
The President of the Republic also authorizes the opening of the simplified procurement procedure, based on material criteria, for the conclusion of the Contract for the Design and Construction of the Luena – Saurimo section of the Benguela Railway (260 kilometres), to be concluded with the consortium formed by the companies Odebrecht – Engenharia e Construção Internacional, Angola Branch (OECI, SA) and Bento Pedroso Construções (BPC).
The Executive intends to extend this means of transport to the Lundas region, taking into account that the Benguela Railway (CFB) constitutes an important railway axis in the connection between the coast and the interior of the national territory, from Benguela to Moxico, allowing the rail transport of goods from the Port of Lobito.
The aim is to provide that part of the country with a safe, reliable and competitive means of transport, which will boost its sustainable development and optimize the means used in activities carried out in the region.
This is the case of mining, highly dependent on means of transport to meet logistical needs, as well as boosting the PLANAGRÃO project, whose objective is to boost industries and their derivatives with a focus on the provinces of Lunda-Norte, Lunda-Sul, Moxico and Cuando Cubango.
