Zambia Issues Expressions Of Interest For The Nseluka To Mpulungu Railway Spur
The Republic of Zambia’s Ministry of Transport and Logistics has initiated an open call for Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for the financing, design, construction, operation, maintenance, and transfer of the Nseluka to Mpulungu Railway Spur situated in the Northern Province of Zambia. This solicitation is part of a broader initiative by the Zambian Government to develop and commercialise vital railway projects to promote trade and consequently boost the country’s economic growth.
The primary goal of this project is to connect Zambia to the Great Lakes Region (Burundi, Rwanda, Congo and Tanzania) stimulating trade and economic activity along the Great Lakes Corridor. The railway is anticipated to cover approximately 192km, linking the existing Tanzania Zambia Railway at Nseluka with Mpulungu harbour via Mbala, thereby enhancing the movement of commodities including sugar, cement, coffee, and certain minerals. This connection is expected to significantly benefit the Great Lakes Corridor by providing a more reliable and efficient transport option for bulk and heavy cargo that is currently transported by road.
The envisioned railway spur will feature state-of-the-art facilities such as a modern station, permanent way, advanced bridge technologies, repair and maintenance facilities, rolling stock, signal and telecommunication systems, railway sidings, branch lines, weighbridges, and quarry and sleeper plants.
The Ministry is seeking a suitably qualified and experienced contractor to undertake this extensive project. Should the winning bid be a consortium, it will be required to establish a special-purpose legal entity to manage the project.
Key dates for interested parties include a prebid meeting scheduled for the 15th of February 2024, at 09:00 hours, located at the Ministry of Transport and Logistics
The submission deadline is the 18th of March 2024, at 16:00 Central African Time.
This document can be acquired from the Ministry upon paying a non-refundable fee of US$25,000.00.
