Washaway in Bonwapitse, Botswana

Botswana Railways has announced the temporary closure of a section of its railway line following continuous heavy rainfall and flooding. The Bonwapitse River has been overflowing since Friday, 10th January 2025, causing significant damage to the rail infrastructure. Approximately 200 metres of track formation were washed away as the water overwhelmed the existing drainage structures.

The Engineering Department is working tirelessly to restore the damaged section and ensure the safe resumption of train operations. Repairs are expected to be completed in the coming days.

Botswana Railways confirmed that no injuries or damage to rolling stock have been recorded during this incident. The public is encouraged to report any occurrences that could compromise railway safety.

The organisation has apologised for any inconvenience caused and appreciates the patience of customers and stakeholders during this time.
