Update On Transnet Freight Rail’s Vryheid Derailment

Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) has made significant progress in the restoration of operations on the coal line. This is after a train derailed on the North Corridor on Thursday, 11 May 2023. Forty-nine (49) loaded wagons on the train, which were enroute to Richards Bay, derailed on the line at the Mqwabe Bypass, between Dumbe and Vryheid. No injuries were reported and operations continued on the line with only 50% reduction, as a result of the derailment.

On 18 May, TFR announced that the North Corridor coal Line 1 was official

The cause of the derailment will be determined once investigations have been finalised.
