Uganda’s #Manifestoweek2023 Shines Spotlight On Railway Sector Achievements
During the recent Manifesto Week 2023, the Uganda Ministry of Transport and Works showcased its accomplishments in the railway sector. They officially announced that advanced negotiations with Turkish firm Yapi Merkezi Eastern Route of the Standard Gauge railway are underway. Construction is still planned for this year, and the acquisition of the Right of Way from Malaba to Kampala is currently in progress, with an estimated overall compensation of Ugx 584bn. Additionally, a feasibility study for the Majanji Port & SGR spur from the port to Tororo is ongoing.
The ministry highlighted the following achievements:
- Connecting the Railway Line to Industrial Hubs
- Completion of the Tororo-Namanve line rehabilitation within six months of the defects liability period
- Commencement of refurbishment for 26.8km of the Kampala-Mukono line
- Maintenance of 5 Mainline locomotives, 7 Light Locomotives, and 645 wagons
- Repair of 20 flatbed wagons
- Maintenance of 5 passenger coaches
- Completion of 18.44% of physical works on the Tororo-Gulu line (375km)
- Completion of the concrete sleeper manufacturing factory, with over 4500 concrete sleepers produced and more than 200 panels assembled.
Recently, a Ugandan delegation led by Hon. Fred Byamukama visited Tanzania for meetings on the Standard Gauge Railway. The delegation is expected to meet with the Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) and other stakeholders in preparation for the Partner States Northern Corridor Integration Projects (NCIPs) SGR cluster meeting, scheduled for May 24-26, 2023, in Kampala.
