Uganda Railways Corporation Supply of Locomotives

On 7 March 2025, Uganda Railways Corporation announced the tender for the supply of 10 new diesel-electric locomotives, including training, maintenance, and operational personnel, had closed.

Thirty-four (34) companies were issued bidding documents, and four (4) companies submitted bids, as per the tender requirements.

Bidding Companies:

  1. China Shandong International Limited
  2. CRRC Qishuyan Company Limited
  3. Sung Shin Rolling Stock Technology Limited
  4. Dalian Lambo Machinery Manufacturing Co., Ltd

The procurement of brand-new locomotives forms part of the Government of Uganda’s EAC Metre Gauge Railway Capacity Building Project, funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB).

The project also includes:

  • Procurement of wagons and a multi-purpose water vessel
  • Rehabilitation of stations and port infrastructure
  • Procurement of Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs)
  • Automation of level crossings
  • Construction of concrete sleeper lines from Kampala to Kyengera and Port Bell
