Two Lives Lost After Fatal Accident Involving TAZARA Locomotives

The Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) deeply regrets to announce the tragic loss of two drivers following a fatal accident involving locomotive numbers 1016 and 1030. The incident occurred at approximately 03:00 hours on Monday, 21 April 2025, at Bridge No. 262, located at kilometre 885+500 in Mbozi District, Songwe Region, Tanzania.

The two locomotives, which were defective and travelling light without cargo from Chozi in Zambia to the Mbeya Workshop in Tanzania for repairs, unfortunately derailed and capsized at the bridge. Emergency services, including the police and fire brigade, promptly responded to the scene upon receiving reports that an accident had occurred.

However, upon arrival, both drivers were found to have died on the spot from the impact of the heavily damaged locomotives. The loss of lives is deeply regretted.

Both the Governments and the respective families have been informed. TAZARA extends its heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased during this difficult time.

Investigations into the cause of the accident are currently underway.

The Railways Africa team extends its deepest condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.
