Travel Advisory: Tanzania

General elections took place in Tanzania on 29 October, and the process has not yet concluded.

Following incidents of unrest and protests in several areas, Tanzanian police authorities announced a curfew effective from 6pm to 6am local time on 29 October, which remains in force on the mainland. Demonstrations continue in parts of the country, some of which have turned violent and involved the use of live ammunition.

There are reports of road blockades and closures across the country, although the situation remains fluid. Flight operations have been disrupted, with many international flights cancelled to and from Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam. Arusha and Kilimanjaro International Airports are reported to be partially operational. Some international and domestic flights to and from Zanzibar Airport have been cancelled, and no ferries are currently running between Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar. The Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) passenger service is also suspended. Travellers should check with their airline or transport provider for the latest updates before travelling.

Travellers are advised to:
• Limit movements and avoid non-essential travel.
• Comply with any curfews or restrictions imposed by local authorities.
• Monitor local and official information sources for updates.
• Follow the instructions of local authorities and security forces.
• Avoid all demonstrations, rallies, and large gatherings.

There are also reports of widespread disruption to mobile networks, internet connectivity, and social media platforms.
