Transnet Engineering and Omnia Celebrate Handover of Three New Ammonia Rail Wagons

Friday, 26 May marked a celebratory moment as Transnet Engineering welcomed Omnia, a diversified chemicals company, to their Germiston manufacturing facility for the official handover of three brand-new ammonia rail wagons. These wagons, a testament to the skilled craftsmanship at Transnet Engineering’s facility, were meticulously built in Germiston, utilising top-quality components manufactured on-site.

Ralph Mills, the Chief Executive of Transnet Engineering, expressed his pride in being a part of this momentous occasion: “It is a great privilege to be here at the Germiston plant to celebrate this milestone. Today, as we present these tanker wagons to Omnia, we also showcase the progress achieved through Transnet Engineering’s turnaround strategy and the diversification of our valued customer base.”

As Transnet Engineering strives to enhance its agility and competitiveness, Mills conveyed his deep appreciation for long-standing partnerships with organisations like Omnia. These newly acquired wagons will enable Omnia to strengthen their local ammonia supply chain for this indispensable chemical.

“Our primary objective is to bolster the flexibility of our ammonia rail transport, and the addition of these extra tankers to our existing fleet will play a crucial role in achieving that,” explained Francois Visagie, Omnia’s manufacturing executive.

The significance of ammonia for Omnia cannot be overstated, as it serves as a key component in the production of nitrogenous fertilizers and mining explosives.

The remaining 17 tankers will be delivered by October 2023, ensuring a steady pace of progress with three wagons being provided per month.
