TMH Will Be Engaged in the Maintenance of Passenger Cars in Egypt

Head of the Egyptian National Railways (ENRW) Mohamed Amer and Vice President of JSC Transmashholding Sergo Kurbanov signed a package of agreements providing for the organization of maintenance of passenger cars of Russian-Hungarian production, supplied under a contract concluded in 2018.
The signing ceremony was held in the city of Cairo in the presence of the Minister of Transport of Egypt, Kamel al-Wazir, and the General Director of TMH, Kirill Lipa. The total cost of the service package is 430 million euros.

According to the signed documents, TMH assumes obligations for technical support of the supplied equipment for 12 years. It is envisaged to develop a project and equip a specialized depot, which will be created in the suburbs of Cairo, train personnel from among local residents, as well as technical maintenance of equipment and the supply of spare parts for wagons. It is assumed that the depot will become part of a new railway industrial cluster being created by the Egyptian side in partnership with leading international companies.

The contract for the supply of initially 1,300 passenger cars for the needs of ENR with a total value of more than a billion euros was signed in 2018. Production was carried out in Russia and Hungary. The party responsible for technology transfer and organization of production was the Tver Carriage Works (TVZ, part of JSC Transmashholding). In 2021, the Russian side completed its part of the deliveries, after which the production is carried out by the Hungarian side using TVZ technology. In 2022, the contract was expanded with 50 wagons with vending machine zones (up to 1,350 units). At the moment, 725 railcars have been delivered to the customer.

Trains with new cars run daily in the directions Cairo – Alexandria (208 km), Cairo – Asyut (380 km), Cairo – Sohag (473 km). The products meet all the requirements for the safety of passenger transportation, provide a modern level of comfort. The service life of wagons in both continental and coastal conditions of Egypt is 40 years.
