The Morocco Rail Plan Schedule is Linked to the Availability of Funding Estimated at 400 Billion Dirhams

The Minister of Transport and Logistics, Mr. Mohammed Abdeljalil, stated on Monday, January 2, 2023, in the Chamber of Representatives, that the schedule of the Morocco Rail Plan, led by the National Railways Office (ONCF), is linked to the availability of the necessary financing, which is estimated at 400 billion dirhams (MMDH).

In response to an oral question on “the creation of a high-speed train (TGV) connecting Oujda to Casablanca and Nador to Tangier”, Mr. ABDELJALIL indicated that the implementation of this Plan, which takes place as part of the ongoing development of the national railway network over the long term, “requires finding innovative financing solutions based on the public-private partnership, in addition to the involvement of local communities”.

The “ambitious” railway plan includes 1,300 km of high-speed lines, which will link Tanger to Agadir on the one hand, and Oujda to Rabat on the other, in addition to 3,800 km of medium-speed lines, the Minister added, noting that the goal is to serve the entire national territory and support the country’s economic growth and anticipated needs for passenger transport.

These projects will connect 43 Moroccan cities instead of 23 currently, and will also ensure railway transport for 87% of the population, an increase of 36%, he said, highlighting that 10 regional transfer centers will be created to organize and improve integration with other modes of transport.
