The Importance of Safety in Railways: A Glimpse into SARA’s Regional Vision

In a recent “Coffee with the Editor” segment, we had the privilege of chatting with Babe Botana, the Executive Director of the Southern African Railways Association (SARA). Our meeting took place during the International Railway Safety Council’s event, hosted by the Railway Safety Regulator.

Mr. Botana firmly believes that railway safety should always be the top priority. He highlighted the extensive implications of overlooking safety. “It’s not just about the railway operators,” he noted, “It’s about the lives of people, the protection of property, and the safeguarding of the environment.” He also emphasized the significant risks associated with potential derailments. These incidents don’t just result in infrastructural damage; their impact is far-reaching. The economic consequences of neglecting safety are immense, he stated, even with substantial capital available.

Central to SARA’s mission is a commitment to enhancing regional trade. Their vision is a seamless, predictable, and cost-effective railway system spanning the region. For this dream to become reality, it’s crucial for the entire region to adopt uniform safety standards. Mr. Botana discussed the implementation of the SARA SADC Safety Standards, which are being adopted by all SADC members.

For those unfamiliar with SARA’s pivotal role, Mr. Botana delves into the association’s history. Founded in 1996 under the SADC Protocol on Transport, Communications, and Meteorology, SARA has played a significant role ever since. He elaborated on the various membership tiers and highlighted the upcoming annual Southern African Railway Associations Conference and Exhibition. This event is a prime platform for exchanging expertise and skills, shaping the trajectory of regional railways. As they aptly put it, “Together We Are Better.”
