Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) has temporarily suspended the operations of the Mulobezi Passenger train service from Livingstone to Mulobezi and vice versa.
The suspension has been necessitated by the unsafe condition of Bombwe Bridge, which needs urgent repair work for the safe passage of the train and passengers. An estimated K27 Million has been set aside for the rehabilitation of Bombwe Bridge, by the Zambian Ministry of Transport and Logistics. The assessment of the Bombwe Bridge is expected to start on the 5th of June for the next three weeks. Only after the assessment has been carried out will ZRL be able to advise on the repairs required and the length of time that these repairs will take.
The Bombwe Bridge on the Mulobezi line stretches about 74m in length. It is located 119km from Livingstone Railway Station. The bridge has been in existence for over 100 years and is constructed out of wood (teak). The wood has a lifespan of 30 years. The bridge’s girders are made of riveted plate metal, spanning across the Bombwe River in five sections.
