TAZARA Teams up with Zambia Railways Ltd and Calabash Freight Ltd to Deliver 160,000 tons of Maize

The Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) is pleased to announce a strategic collaboration with Zambia Railways Ltd and Calabash Freight Ltd to transport over 160,000 metric tons of maize from Makambako and Vwawa, in Tanzania, to Kalomo, in Zambia.

The special operation for the transportation of maize is part of the Zambian government’s procurement of 650,000 metric tons of maize from Tanzania, whose contract was signed on 29 June 2024 in Dar es Salaam between the National Food Reserve Agency of Tanzania and the Food Reserve Agency of Zambia.

TAZARA’s Managing Director, Eng. Bruno Ching’andu, stated: “We are committed to supporting the Zambian government’s efforts to secure maize supply and enhance food security in Zambia, which was recently affected by the drought that hit most parts of Southern Africa.”

Eng. Ching’andu revealed that the three companies will pool their resources, including locomotives and wagons, to ensure the efficient transportation of the maize, moving at least 20,000 metric tons per month over the next eight months.

This joint effort demonstrates the strength and reliability of railway partnerships in addressing logistical challenges and delivering essential goods when and where they are needed most.
