Tanzania Railways Morogoro Workshop Revives Five MGR Locomotives

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Capital Investment (PIC), led by its Chairperson, Hon. Masanja Kungu Kadogosa, recently visited the Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) workshop in Morogoro Region on 13 June 2026 to inspect the maintenance, revival and upgrading of train locomotives.

The Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Capital Investment, Hon. Kadogosa, said the purpose of the visit was to inspect progress on the repair, revival and improvement of train locomotives. To date, the Corporation has successfully revived five locomotives, a step that has helped increase the Corporation’s operational output.

“The workshop is the heart of the railway, and this work of repair and revival requires funding. As the PIC Committee, we will ensure that institutions allocated special funds receive this money to continue work such as that being done at the workshop. We greatly commend the Ministry of Transport and the Railway Corporation for this innovation,” Hon. Kadogosa added.

The Minister of Transport, Hon. Prof. Makame Mbarawa, said the Government has reduced the cost of sending MGR locomotives to Malaysia by strengthening the availability of spare parts and carrying out maintenance locally through the TRC Morogoro Workshop.

The Morogoro Workshop, which has a total of 121 employees, currently services 68 locomotives, comprising 50 mainline locomotives and 18 shunting locomotives. It also continues to oversee both scheduled and emergency maintenance.

Why it Matters

The revival of five MGR locomotives at TRC’s Morogoro Workshop highlights the role of local railway maintenance capacity in improving asset availability. By carrying out repair, revival and upgrading work in-country, Tanzania Railways Corporation is strengthening its ability to support operational output without relying solely on overseas maintenance channels.
