Tanzania Railways Announces Arrival Of Modern EMU Trains

Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) has officially announced the arrival of the first set of modern Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) trains at the Port of Dar es Salaam. This significant milestone occurred on April 3, 2024, marking a crucial phase in Tanzania’s rail transport modernization efforts.

The first shipment includes five electric locomotives and three passenger carriages, part of a larger procurement of ten sets from South Korean manufacturer Hyundai Rotem. Each EMU set is capable of carrying 589 passengers and achieving speeds of up to 160km per hour. These state-of-the-art units are equipped with modern passenger amenities including Wi-Fi, specialized seating for those with additional needs, advanced air conditioning systems, and comprehensive security measures such as CCTV.

This delivery is part of the Tanzanian government’s extensive efforts to enhance public transportation infrastructure under the TRC banner. In total, the government has received 65 passenger carriages and 9 electric locomotives, with additional EMU sets expected to arrive monthly until October 2024.

The introduction of these EMUs is set to transform passenger experiences on Tanzania’s international standard gauge railway, which is nearing completion in several phases. Current progress includes 98.90% completion of the Dar es Salaam to Morogoro section, 96.51% for Morogoro to Makutupora, 13.98% for Makutupora to Tabora, 5.44% for Tabora to Isaka, and 54.01% completion for the Mwanza to Isaka stretch.

This development not only boosts TRC’s capability in managing high-speed passenger services but also aligns with broader governmental goals of improving national infrastructure and connectivity.
