Tanzania Launches Cargo Services on SGR Between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma
Tanzania has officially launched cargo train operations along its Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), marking another significant development in the ongoing improvement of transport along the Central Corridor. The new cargo service between Pugu Station in Dar es Salaam and Ihumwa Station in Dodoma commenced on Friday, 27 June 2025.
This new service follows the strong performance of the SGR passenger operations, which have already transported over 2.5 million people since beginning on 14 June 2024. The introduction of freight services is expected to enhance the movement of goods across the country, offering a more efficient and safer alternative for cargo transport.
The Central Corridor Transit Transport Facilitation Agency (CCTTFA) has acknowledged this milestone, commending the Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC) and the Government of Tanzania for their ongoing commitment to advancing transport and trade within the region. The new cargo operations represent a key step towards achieving seamless and efficient movement of both goods and people along the Corridor.
