Tanzania–Burundi–DRC SGR Phase II Records Satisfactory Progress Despite Funding-Linked Delays

The Implementation Progress and Results Report (IPR) for the Multinational Tanzania–Burundi–DRC Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Project Phase II indicates that the project remains on track to achieve its development objectives, despite delays primarily linked to funding mobilisation and advance payments by the Bank.

The project aims to improve transport connectivity along the Central Corridor to enhance regional integration and trade, while unlocking large-scale farming and mining activities in the region. It is being implemented by Tanzania Railways Corporation, with the Government of Tanzania acting as borrower and guarantor.

The reporting period follows a field supervision mission conducted between 17 and 23 November 2025, with the report dated 5 December 2025.

Performance on Lot 6 is described as low but commensurate with the level of advance payments made. The report states that USD 260 million has been disbursed for Lot 6 advance payments.

For Lots 7 and 8, works contracts were signed in March 2025, with the first tranche of advance payments made in November 2025. Commencement of works is expected by February 2026.
