Talks to Operationalise Chipata–Mchinji Railway Line
Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) has begun strategic meetings with Nacala Logistics to operationalise the Chipata–Mchinji railway line, providing a direct link to Mozambique’s Nacala Port via the Nacala Corridor. This initiative offers Zambia a viable alternative to the North-South Corridor for bulk cargo, supporting regional trade and positioning the country as a land-linked hub in Southern Africa.
A ZRL delegation led by Managing Director Eng. Cuthbert Malindi conducted a site visit to Chipata and the Nacala Port, engaging with key stakeholders including Nacala Logistics and Mozambique’s rail and port authority, CFM. The discussions focused on infrastructure upgrades, corridor diversification, and developing the proposed Chipata–Serenje greenfield project to further connect Zambia to the Copperbelt and the DRC.
The operationalisation plan targets a three-month timeframe and includes collaboration in rolling stock, infrastructure, and dry port development. The Nacala Corridor’s deep-water port, shorter transit times, and increased cargo capacity offer significant logistical and economic advantages for Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique.
ZRL commenced Chipata -Mchinji train operations on 9th May,2014 . In 2016 , the railway line between Mchinji and Blantyre was characterized by wash aways due to heavy rains which led to the closure of the railway line.
