Strengthening Nairobi’s Transport Infrastructure: A Call for Expertise

In a significant move to enhance urban mobility within Nairobi, the Government of Kenya, supported by the African Development Bank (AfDB), has announced a request for expressions of interest from consulting firms. This request focuses on the detailed service planning and an update to the design study for the “Rail & Road Based Mass Rapid Transit System on Jogoo Road Corridor- Nairobi, Kenya- BRT Line 4- Phase 1.” This initiative marks a pivotal step in addressing the burgeoning transport demands of the Nairobi Metropolitan Area, aiming to establish a sustainable, efficient, and integrated mass rapid transit system.

The project is part of a broader strategy to develop a comprehensive transport network that includes both Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and commuter rail systems. These efforts are in response to the findings of the 2014 Mass Rapid Transit Harmonization Study, which highlighted the critical need for such infrastructure to cater to the city’s current and future transportation requirements.

Project Overview

BRT Line 4, Phase 1, also known as the East side project, will span approximately 10km connecting Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital to the Central Business District (CBD) via Kayole Spine Road, Manyanja Road, and Jogoo Road. This route is expected to play a significant role in alleviating congestion and providing a reliable transport option for residents.

Furthermore, the project includes a future Phase 2, extending the network to cover a 20km stretch from the CBD towards the western parts of Nairobi, thereby creating an extensive transit system that links key urban areas.

Consultancy Objectives

The selected consultancy will be tasked with building upon the existing groundwork laid out by the 2015 “Rail & Road Based Mass Rapid Transit System on Jogoo Road Corridor” study. The objective is to refine and expand upon this foundational research, delivering a detailed project report that encompasses demand assessments, service plans, impact analyses, and detailed infrastructure designs.
