SAFLog Achieves New Milestone: SARS Clearance for Bonded Warehouse Enhances Pit-To-Port Strategy

SAFLog, a frontrunner in integrated logistics solutions, has achieved a significant milestone with the recent clearance from the South African Revenue Service (SARS) for its bonded warehouse in KwaZulu-Natal, Iran Road. This development is a key component of SAFLog’s ambitious ‘Pit-To-Port Strategy’, aimed at providing seamless, one-stop-shop solutions for logistics and transportation.

Strategic Location and Infrastructure

The recently acquired 26,000 sqm warehouse, located on Iran Road in the bustling Durban Port area, is a testament to SAFLog’s commitment to operational excellence. Situated in the Bayhead precinct, this multi-purpose facility boasts direct rail access, allowing the handling of multiple commodities simultaneously. This strategic location offers unparalleled convenience for containerised and breakbulk cargo operations in and out of New Pier area, also providing an alternative solution to the congested Maydon Wharf area.

“Our strategic location with easy road and rail access near New Pier, and even Maydon Wharf, positions us uniquely in the logistics landscape. Maydon Wharf’s infrastructure, particularly the roads, has been under strain due to high usage. By offering an alternative through New Pier, we aim to alleviate these constraints, enhancing the efficiency and reliability of logistics operations in the region,” stated Thami Gwala, CEO of SAFLog.

Advanced Capabilities and Flexibility

SAFLog’s bonded warehouse represents a hub of dynamic capabilities and advanced logistics solutions. The facility has been granted a scheduled permit, allowing it to efficiently handle commodities such as Chrome and Manganese in bulk, along with other minerals in bagged form. This specialised handling capability, combined with no limitations on general or project cargo, underscores the versatility and robustness of SAFLog’s operations.

Additionally, the SARS clearance for the bonded warehouse not only bolsters SAFLog’s ability to serve a wide array of clients within South Africa but also enables SAFLog to reach and service customers in the SADC region, strengthening the company’s reach beyond local markets.

“Our Bond licence is a game-changer, enabling us to expand our target market to include clients across the SADC region, not just locally. The integration of our Pit-To-Port strategy with the Iran Road facility is pivotal, transforming us into a one-stop shop for our client’s logistics needs. Moreover, our unique access to rail and the ability to utilise our own locomotives for local shunting operations assists Transnet significantly with local shunting and is a significant advantage for our site’s operational efficiency,” highlights Gwala.

Sustainable Growth and Vision

Uniquely positioned as the only warehouse in the New Pier area with both road and rail access, this advantage is complemented by the company’s ownership of locomotives for efficient shunting operations, further streamlining logistics processes. SAFLog’s 15-year lease with the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) underscores the long-term sustainability and commitment of the company to the region.

SAFLog is focused on nurturing long-term relationships with niche anchor clients, offering tailored logistics solutions from pit to port. The company is strategically positioning itself to become the preferred warehouse at New Pier for handling Breakbulk and Project cargo, as well as containerised shipments, thereby significantly reducing congestion at the Port of Durban. SAFLog’s commitment extends to establishing Durban as the premier port within the SADC region, through the development of new cross-border business opportunities.

Fundamental to this vision is the reintegration of rail into port operations, which, along with the optimisation of truck traffic, not only increases logistical efficiency but also supports a more sustainable and environmentally friendly transport ecosystem.

“Our recent SARS clearance for the bonded warehouse represents a significant step forward in our Pit-To-Port strategy. It is integral to our commitment to providing comprehensive logistics solutions and reinforces the Port of Durban’s role as a key player in Southern Africa’s logistics network,” concludes Gwala.
