Rebrand Signals Regional Growth: Amsted Reelin Brings Smart Rail Technology to Africa

Amsted Reelin has announced a bold new chapter in its journey with the relaunch of its brand identity and an expanded railway product portfolio designed to meet the needs of African railways.

For Amsted Reelin, the rebrand represents far more than a new logo. It is the culmination of decades of persistence, partnership, and resilience.

Roots in Industry

The Reelin Group was established in June 1986 by Boyce Naidoo. Initially focused on the mining and engineering sectors, the company entered the rail industry two decades later through exploratory discussions with Amsted Rail International in Chicago.

In 2005, Reelin approached Transnet under the Vulindlela Project, an initiative aimed at empowering local businesses and broadening participation in the rail supply chain. Through perseverance, the company secured its first contract in 2007.

Building a Unique Capability

From that first contract, the partnership with Amsted Rail has developed into a comprehensive operation. Today, Amsted Reelin operates a facility unique not only in Africa but across the entire Southern Hemisphere. What began with bearings has since expanded into slack adjusters, draft gears, bogies and complete undercarriage systems for wagons.

Naidoo describes Amsted Reelin as the largest player in South Africa’s rail component industry and a growing force across sub-Saharan Africa. Its products, he noted, will keep “wheels on the track, brakes on the system, and wagons stopping and starting for decades to come.”

Global Support, Local Impact

Matt Stoneburner, Vice President of International at Amsted Rail, emphasised the global significance of the joint venture. “Amsted Rail is extremely excited about our relationship with Reelin. It has lasted almost 20 years. This rebranding is an opportunity to share the evolution of the journey we’ve taken,” he said.

He added that the rebrand serves as the launchpad for the next phase: Amsted Motion Control Bogies and Amsted Digital Service Solutions.

A Win-Win Partnership

Naidoo described the Amsted–Reelin relationship as a “win-win of note.” Through the collaboration, South Africa has gained access to intellectual property and advanced rail technology that would not otherwise have been available locally. In return, Amsted has benefited from new business opportunities created by Reelin’s network and market presence.

This balance of global knowledge and local opportunity, Naidoo explained, ensures that the partnership is sustainable and will remain relevant for generations to come. He reflected that raising the new flags and showcasing the rebrand was an emotional moment, honouring not only current achievements but also the contributions of past management who have since retired.

A Renewed Brand for a Growing Market

Executive Director, Reesh Naidoo, highlights that while the new logo reflects the venture’s joint identity, it also symbolises the strength of the partnership between Amsted Rail and the Reelin Group, and the company’s readiness to expand its footprint.

Looking ahead, he outlined plans for product development and manufacturing capacity to support both South Africa and the wider African market. “We are looking forward to future success in new product development, such as bogies, further manufacturing, and enhancing capabilities within South Africa to support the African continent and market,” he said.

The company’s current portfolio includes Motion Control™ bogies, fully tested and approved for use on Transnet and South African rail tracks, as well as certified bearings, braking equipment, slack adjusters, draft gears, coupling equipment, and wheelset components.

Smart Technology and Reliability

Stoneburner emphasised that Amsted Rail is bringing proven technology and smart solutions to Africa’s rail industry. Motion Control Bogies, widely used in North America, can run 1.5 million kilometres or 8 to 10 years before requiring major maintenance, compared with the 2–3 years typically required for existing rolling stock in South Africa and can last up to 50 years.

This leap in reliability is complemented by Amsted Digital Solutions, which provide condition monitoring for wheelsets and bearings, track-and-trace capability, load monitoring, and overall health monitoring of rolling stock. Together, these create a “smart bogie” system that combines mechanical durability with digital intelligence.

For operators and leasing companies, the value lies in asset uptime and predictability. Reduced downtime means better utilisation, more efficient scheduling, and stronger return on investment. “These are significant financial commitments,” Stoneburner explained. “What we provide is peace of mind and reliability, ensuring rolling stock is efficient, productive, and delivering value.”

Milestones and the Road Ahead

As South Africa and its neighbours work to modernise rail infrastructure, the presence of a fully capable, locally embedded partner with global expertise offers both opportunity and reassurance. Amsted Reelin’s leadership is confident that the renewed brand identity, combined with motion control technology and digital innovation, will enable the company to contribute meaningfully to the continent’s transport future, one built on resilience, innovation and collaboration.
