Railco Africa Completes First Four GL30 Locomotives for Africa Global Logistics’ SITARAIL Concession

Railco Africa has sold eight GL30 locomotives to Africa Global Logistics (AGL) for deployment in West Africa. Four units have completed refurbishment and metre-gauge conversion and are now being shipped to AGL’s SITARAIL concession, while the remaining four are still undergoing refurbishment ahead of delivery to Camrail. In this on-site interview with Railways Africa, Railco Director Andrew Thomas outlines the scope and progress of the project.

Originally built to Cape gauge, the locomotives have been fully reengineered for metre-gauge operation and adapted to meet West Africa’s operational requirements. The programme has passed through several inspection and testing stages, including technical inspections, dynamic testing, brake testing, and final factory acceptance.

Thomas notes that the GL30 platform has demonstrated strong reliability across African operations since 2012, consistently achieving availability rates of around 99 percent under proper maintenance. Their simplicity, robust design, and extensive support network make them well suited to African conditions.

Following the sale and upcoming deliveries to AGL, Railco will continue operating a fleet of ten GL30s and approximately 150 wagons across regional contracts, positioning the company to support the evolving rail landscape as private-sector participation grows.
