Rail Cargo Hungaria has Started Exporting Hungarian Grain to Africa
Since the end of the domestic harvest, it has transported 14,000 tons of ears of corn to the port of Rijeka, mainly destined for Egypt and Tunisia.
RCH, in cooperation with the Croatian state railway company (HŽ Cargo), has so far transported mainly wheat and barley from Miskolc to the ships waiting in the Adriatic docks in 13 trains. During the deliveries, the Croatian company also makes considerable use of the grain truck sets.
The market-leading Hungarian rail freight company has received an order to double the current volume by the end of the year, and is also negotiating the transmission of Ukrainian transit grain in addition to Hungarian grain exports.
Thanks to this year’s high wheat and barley crop averages in Hungary, as well as the expected excellent corn crop, the demand for grain transportation by rail has increased significantly since the beginning of August. RCH is expected to export more than 1 million tons of Hungarian crops this year. The company makes available 700 of its own and 1,500 dedicated grain wagons of the group of companies for the fulfillment of transit tasks related to the export of domestic crops and Ukrainian grain crops to Western Europe.
60% of Hungarian grain exports go to Italy, 30% to Germany, and a smaller part to Austria and other European markets. RCH’s efficient rail logistics solutions give Hungarian grain an advantage on foreign markets in the fierce price competition generated by Ukrainian grain.
The company delegates high-performance Vectron locomotives to grain trains, enabling the formation and transmission of trains with a payload of up to 2,200 tons (1,600 net tons), thereby reducing the unit cost of transportation. It also improves cost efficiency by radically reducing car turnaround times. An increasing proportion of the traffic to Italy, for example, is carried out without changing locomotives at the border crossing in Gätyényés. In Croatia, train drivers of the Croatian subsidiary of Rail Cargo Carrier forward the trains, and in Gyékényes, a dedicated border station coordinator ensures the smooth passage of trains.
