President of the Republic Inaugura the New Port of Nacala
The President of the Republic, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi inaugurated, on October 7, 2023, the new facilities of the Port of Nacala, in Nampula.
Porto gained a new dynamic from the point of view of operations, thanks to the expansion and modernization of its infrastructures, which contributes to increasing the capacity for handling and storing containerized cargo and reducing the length of stay of ships at the pier.
With modernization, the handling capacity goes from the current 100 thousand tons of containerized cargo to 252 thousand, an increase of more than 150 percent.
According to the Chairman of the Board of Directors of CFM, Eng. Agostinho Francisco Langa Junior, with the new Port it is expected to increase the storage capacity of eight thousand tons of containerized cargo and mooring of ships of great draft, with, also attracting cargo to and from Malawi, Zambia and other countries.
The reopening of the port was witnessed by the Heads of State of Malawi, Lazarus Chakwera and Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, respectively and the deputy foreign minister of Japan, Hosaka Yasushi.
Filipe Nyusi said at the time that the logistical advantages of the Port of Nacala should have an impact on trade, bringing more income, in order to leverage the development of the region.
He said that these infrastructures are crucial for exports and imports of cereals, fertilizers, fuels, medicines and equipment to meet domestic needs.
It recalled that Malawi has crops with strong export value, namely tobacco, sugar, coffee, tea, cotton, beans and vegetables, while Zambia exports precious stones, copper wires, cement, etc, sugar and corn.
Thus, the rehabilitation of the Port of Nacala will allow countries in the region to benefit from greater efficiency in cargo handling as a result of new and modern equipment.
In fact, it was in this context that the three statesmen signed, on Saturday, management agreements for the Nacala Corridor, within the framework of the Southern African trade and connectivity project in the regional coordination component, in, with the aim of strengthening operations and fostering the development of the region.
For the President of the Republic, the agreements represent a new management paradigm, in a tripartite approach to the concerns of economic agents, ensuring integrated mechanisms for the movement of people and goods. The aim is to reduce transport costs and freight transit time.
