Parliamentary Investment Committee Satisfied With The Start Of Tanzania Railways Corporation SGR Operations
The Tanzania Railways Corporation – TRC welcomed a delegation from the Parliamentary Permanent Committee on Public Investments – PIC for an inspection tour of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) construction project from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro on March 27, 2024.
The Vice Chairman of the Parliamentary Permanent Committee on Public Investments, Hon. Augustine Vuma, expressed on behalf of the committee their satisfaction with the high standards of the construction infrastructure.
“The project has been built to good and appropriate standards, and once the journeys begin, they will reduce the long travel times for passengers,” Hon. Vuma said.
Furthermore, Hon. Vuma mentioned that the project’s implementation has directly created over 30,000 jobs and indirectly 150,000 jobs, facilitating an income of more than 650 billion.
“Freight transport costs will decrease by 40%, as we have witnessed the directions of Hon. President that the train begins operations in July this year are going to be fulfilled,” Hon. Vuma explained.
The Chairman of the TRC Board of Directors, Prof. Ally Karavina, stated that the trials are progressing well and a significant portion of the project for the first phase has been completed.
“Let’s reassure Tanzanians that this strategic project will bring significant benefits to the development of our nation,” said Karavina.
The General Director from TRC, Masanja Kadogosa, thanked the PIC Committee for their satisfaction after inspecting the project using the SGR electric train and observing how the operational systems work reliably.
“The most important thing is for us to continue working hard to ensure that by July, journeys from Dar Es Salaam to Dodoma begin,” Mr Kadogosa said.
The SGR project is expected to bring significant economic transformations to the nation and neighbouring countries by transporting passengers and goods.
