Nigeria: Egba Monarch Advocates For Nationwide Support Of Federal Government’s Railway Expansion Projects
In a significant push for the advancement of Nigeria’s railway infrastructure, the Alake of Egba, His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Michael Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo CFR, Okukena IV, has called upon key stakeholders in the transportation sector to lend their support to the federal government’s railway projects. During discussions with the Transportation Minister, the monarch emphasized the importance of the Lagos – Abeokuta – Ibadan Standard Gauge rail line and other projects for reducing travel time, road delays, and automobile accidents. He further advocated for the extension of railway lines to Kano and the acceleration of the Port Harcourt Maiduguri narrow gauge line project to enhance connectivity to Maiduguri.
Highlighting the critical role of transportation in national unity and economic distribution, Oba Gbadebo’s remarks came as part of the 18th National Council on Transportation meeting, aimed at fostering a safe, secure, and comfortable transportation system across the country. The Minister shared President Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s vision for easing the populace’s burdens, particularly in Ogun State, a vital economic gateway. Discussions also touched on the nation’s transportation policy and the quest for an affordable transportation system amidst the removal of fuel subsidies.
The engagement extended to a courtesy visit to the Governor of Ogun State, His Excellency, Dapo Abiodun, where both parties agreed on the urgency of completing and upgrading key rail projects. The visit underscored the state’s strategic importance to Nigeria’s transportation network, further highlighted by the recent separation of Ogun’s Ministry of Transportation from the Ministry of Works to better address transportation issues. This initiative represents a concerted effort by various levels of government and the monarchy to enhance Nigeria’s transportation infrastructure for economic development and national cohesion.
