Nacala Logistics: Innovations and Challenges in Railway and Port Operations
At the recent Southern African Railways Association (SARA) annual conference and exhibition, Carlos Dias, the General Manager of Railway and Port Operations at Nacala Logistics provided a detailed overview of the organisation’s extensive operations, innovative approaches, and the challenges they face. With a vast network under his supervision, Dias underscored the pivotal role of Nacala Logistics in enhancing regional infrastructure.
Employment and Local Development
A notable aspect of Nacala Logistics is its employment strategy. The company currently boasts a workforce of 2,300, with 80% being national citizens. This emphasis on local hiring and development is particularly commendable, considering that just seven years ago, the project began without a pre-existing port facility.
Railway Networks and Port Operations
The network managed by Nacala Logistics extends nearly 1,500 kilometres, connecting Nacala to crucial areas and incorporating integrated solutions like ports, coal ports, mines, and rolling stock. The company is responsible for the entire operation, including running trains and maintaining railway infrastructure.
Capacity and Expansion at Nacala Logistics
General Cargo Transport
Nacala Logistics boasts the capability to transport four million tons of general cargo annually, including food items. This capacity is supported by a robust fleet, consisting of trains running with two locomotives and up to 80 wagons, contributing to a total of 300 wagons. Each wagon carries an average load of 35 tons, and the trains operate at an average speed of 50 km/h, ensuring efficient and timely transportation.
Coal Line Operations
The main coal transport line, also known as the mainline, currently has the capacity to handle 18 million tons annually (mta). The fleet comprises 85 Dash 09 and 16 AC30i locomotives, along with 2 677 wagons. Each wagon is designed to carry 63 tons at speeds of up to 70 km/h. Nacala Logistics is undertaking an ambitious expansion plan to increase the capacity of this line to 22 million tons by the end of the next year.
Port Operations
In the domain of port services, Nacala operates a deep-water port with a depth of 20 metres CD – and a current capacity of handling 18 million tons annually. This facility enhances the logistical capabilities of Nacala Logistics, especially for bulk cargo handling.
Passenger Rail Services
Nacala Logistics also extends its services to passenger rail transport, offering five established routes that facilitate regional connectivity. These routes are:
- Nacala-Nampula
- Nampula-Cuamba
- Cuamba-Lichinga
- Cuamba-Entre Lagos
- Limbe-Nayuchi
These routes play a critical role in connecting various regions and communities, demonstrating Nacala Logistics’ commitment to providing comprehensive transportation solutions.
Technological Advancements at Nacala Logistics
Nacala Logistics has established itself as a leader in leveraging advanced technological infrastructure, ensuring high operational efficiency and sustainability. This technological prowess is key to managing substantial cargo volumes and operating numerous trains with reliability and safety. Here are some core aspects of their technological advancements:
- Monitoring and Control Centres: Integrated railway operators centre to centralise the management and control of train operations.
- Advanced Signalling Systems: Technologies such as the Train Traffic Control System (TCTS) and Electronic Train Order (ETO).
- Positive Train Control (PTC): An advanced train control system that uses a combination of GPS, wireless communication, and onboard computers to monitor and control train movements.
- Rail Infrastructure Maintenance and Monitoring: Technologies to monitor and maintain rail infrastructure more effectively. This includes the use of remote sensing technologies, such as drones and satellite imagery, for inspecting tracks and bridges.
- Energy Efficiency: Technologies to monitor the consumption of diesel. This includes projects such as Start-Stop and Trip Optimizer to reduce diesel consumption by up to 8%.
Addressing Challenges and Seizing Opportunities
Dias identified two significant challenges: harmonising cross-border regulations for the movement of goods and passengers, and tackling the issue of infrastructure theft. He stressed the importance of collaboration to overcome these obstacles and welcomed open discussions and knowledge-sharing to find effective solutions.
