Mozambique Launches Pilot Intermodal Passenger Transport Service Linking Matola and Maputo
Mozambique has launched a new pilot public transport initiative integrating rail and bus services between the cities of Matola and Maputo. Operated by CFM – Ports and Railways. The 60-day pilot phase includes 15 buses, each with a 90-passenger capacity, connecting key stations on the Ressano Garcia railway line—Matola Gare, Daniel, and Machava—with surrounding neighbourhoods.
This intermodal service enables passengers to travel seamlessly between trains and buses using a single rechargeable electronic ticket. At Maputo’s Central Station, connections extend to Praça dos Combatentes and Museu terminals.
The pilot is designed to test a citizen-oriented model with integrated timetables, unified ticketing, and improved access. The initiative lays the groundwork for a broader urban mobility strategy across Greater Maputo and eventually other cities in Mozambique.
