Locomotive Cleared from Tema Harbour for Tema–Mpakadan Railway Line

The Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) has confirmed the successful clearance of the locomotive designated for operations on the Tema–Mpakadan Railway Line from Tema Harbour.

The clearance marks a further step towards operationalising the Tema–Mpakadan Railway Line, which forms part of Ghana’s wider efforts to revitalise the railway sector and improve passenger and freight transport capacity.

As part of the process, a technical team from GRDA, together with port officials and representatives of the locomotive manufacturer, carried out inspections to confirm the locomotive’s readiness for deployment and future operations.

The Tema–Mpakadan Railway Line is expected to support a shift in the movement of heavy cargo from road to rail, particularly for industries and businesses operating along the corridor. This is intended to reduce congestion on major highways, limit road damage caused by heavy vehicles, and provide a more efficient and cost-effective transport alternative.

The introduction of the locomotive is also expected to strengthen logistics and connectivity along the Tema–Mpakadan corridor, supporting both passenger and freight services. According to GRDA, the development is aligned with national objectives to improve transport infrastructure, stimulate economic activity and support regional trade.

Once operational, the line is expected to play an important role in improving freight mobility between Tema and Mpakadan, while contributing to broader efforts to enhance rail-based transport in Ghana.
