Kigoma Residents Encouraged to Support SGR Project Construction
The Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) is conducting an awareness and sensitisation campaign in villages along the Uvinza – Malagarasi – Musongati section of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project in March 2025.
The campaign aims to educate and prepare communities affected by the project to understand and address various issues that may arise during construction.
Key topics covered include security and protection of contractor and TRC assets, procedures for submitting and registering feedback, environmental conservation, and land acquisition processes.
Speaking during a working session between TRC and the Kigoma Regional Commissioner’s Office, Acting Regional Administrative Secretary Mr. Sangu Deogratius highlighted Tanzania’s success in developing its railway sector as a model for other African nations. He urged TRC to maintain professionalism and expedite the completion of the SGR, which will connect Tanzania and Burundi.
“I commend TRC for its professionalism and efficiency in constructing the initial SGR sections. I trust that this phase will also be completed on time to enhance trade and cooperation between our two countries,” said Mr. Sangu.
He further praised TRC for organising the awareness campaign, emphasising that it would facilitate smooth project execution by fostering trust and cooperation among residents, TRC, and the contractor.
SGR Project Manager for Lots 7 & 8 (Uvinza – Musongati) at TRC, Engineer Manoni Bundu, stated that TRC has planned multiple awareness campaigns to prevent conflicts and ensure communities benefit from the SGR project.
“This is not the last campaign. TRC will conduct many more throughout the construction period, each addressing different aspects to ensure the community fully understands the project and minimises potential disputes,” said Engineer Manoni.
The awareness and sensitisation campaign continues across Kigoma Region, covering 25 villages in Uvinza and Kasulu districts along the Uvinza – Musongati section of the SGR project.
