Kenya Commissions An Additional 430 New Freight Wagons
Transport Principal Secretary Mr Mohamed Daghar has officially inaugurated 430 new freight wagons from China, marking a significant enhancement in Kenya’s railway infrastructure. Among these, 230 wagons are tailored for the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) line, while the remaining 200 are designed for the Metre Gauge Railway (MGR) line. These wagons boast a robust capacity of 70 tonnes each and are set to play a crucial role in transporting various goods, including containerized cargo, steel coils, tank containers, billets, and vehicles.
The addition of these wagons is poised to significantly boost cargo transportation from the Port of Mombasa to the inland areas, thereby streamlining trade activities and contributing to the nation’s economic growth. Mr. Mohamed Daghar emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing operational efficiency in the railway sector, underscoring its strategic importance in the country’s economic development.
The decision to acquire these new wagons comes against the backdrop of increased cargo volumes passing through the Port of Mombasa, necessitating the need for more efficient transportation methods. The event was attended by notable figures including Phillip Mainga, the Managing Director of Kenya Railways, and Captain William Ruto from the Kenya Ports Authority, signifying the collaborative effort towards improving Kenya’s transport sector.
Latest Updates on Kenya Railways’ Ongoing SGR-MGR Link Project
The 17km, SGR-MGR Link project in Mombasa will be completed by 31 May 2024. The project includes the construction of new MGR passenger stations at Mombasa Terminus, Miritini, Changamwe West, Changamwe East, Shimanzi and the Mombasa Central Station.
Updates on Additional rolling stock for Kenya Railways
Kenya Railways will soon receive 20 passenger coaches, consisting of four business class, three first class, 12 economy coaches, and one power car designed for operations on the Standard Gauge Railway line. These additional coaches will support the high demand for Madaraka Express Passenger Services.
