Kano-Maradi Rail Project Set To Move Forward
The Federal Government of Nigeria, represented by the Minister of Transportation, Sen. Said Alkali, has engaged in discussions with a group of financial institutions interested in funding the Kano-Maradi rail project. This project, spanning 284+103km from Kano to Maradi, aims to boost trade, provide an alternative transportation mode, and strengthen Nigeria’s bilateral relations with the Niger Republic. Sen. Alkali affirmed the government’s commitment to the project, promising prospective financiers a good return on investment and a secure partnership environment. The consortium of banks, including the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), the Development Bank of Southern Africa, the African Finance Bank, Rand Merchant Bank, and the China Construction Bank, has shown interest in funding the project pending a thorough due diligence process. This process involves detailed discussions with various Nigerian ministries and site visits to ensure the project’s feasibility and sustainability. The rail project, which is expected to extend to Algeria, has been guaranteed by the Nigerian government, emphasizing its trans-national significance and zero risk of the Niger Republic withdrawing from the agreement. The Ministry has also conducted an environmental social impact assessment, receiving approval to commence physical work on the project.
