Indra Wins €40 Million Santiago Rail Communications Contract
Indra has been awarded a contract by EFE Trenes de Chile, the state-owned company responsible for managing and operating the country’s railway services, to deploy an integrated communications system for the new Alameda–Melipilla and Santiago–Batuco lines. The project is one of Chile’s most significant recent rail infrastructure developments, linking central Santiago with more than 13 outlying areas across the Metropolitan Region.
The contract includes the design, development, construction, installation, configuration, integration, testing, commissioning, and final acceptance of the communications systems for both lines. Indra’s technology will support more modern and efficient rail communications management, with a strong emphasis on cybersecurity across the network.
The solution will incorporate advanced technologies to enable reliable, real-time communication and information exchange between trains, stations, personnel, and a new integrated operations control centre. The system will allow for centralised monitoring and coordination, enabling faster decision-making, improved incident response, and more efficient railway operations.
Indra will also deploy a critical multiservice network, along with closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems, public address systems, telephony, intercoms, and access control. In addition, the company will implement its In-Mova Traffic platform to monitor and manage critical infrastructure data, as well as a screen-based passenger information system, all supported by a robust cybersecurity framework. Two control centres will also be delivered to support operations and comprehensive system monitoring.
Marcelo Peñailillo, Director of the Mobility Business Unit at Indra Group in Chile, said the project represents a significant milestone for urban mobility in the Metropolitan Region. He noted that it will strengthen rail connectivity between the outskirts and central Santiago while improving daily commuting conditions for thousands of passengers. He also emphasised EFE Trenes de Chile’s focus on delivering modern, reliable, and sustainable transport services, adding that the contract reinforces Indra’s commitment to the development of Chile’s rail sector and improved user outcomes.
The contract further strengthens Indra’s position as a strategic technology partner in Chile’s railway modernisation programme. The company has previously delivered key systems for EFE Trenes de Chile, including the ticketing system for the Alameda–Nos line, and is currently working on projects for Biotren, Metro Valparaíso, and the MPLS network between Santiago and Concepción.
Indra has also delivered major mobility solutions across Chile, including a comprehensive ticketing system for the Santiago Metro, featuring self-service machines, onboard validators, and access control systems. Additional deployments include the In-Mova Traffic platform for traffic and infrastructure management, free-flow tolling technology at the El Melón tunnel, and a port digitisation platform at the Port of Valparaíso.
Globally, Indra has implemented similar end-to-end technology solutions across multiple markets, including Australia, the Netherlands, Ireland, Estonia, Lithuania, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, India, Malaysia, and Spain.
