Government Assures China Railway CRCC of Support in TAZARA Revitalisation Process
The Zambian government has assured support to China Railway Construction Corporation Limited (CRCC), the parent company of China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), in its revitalisation process of the TAZARA.
On 29 September 2025, Zambia, China and Tanzania signed a joint Agreement to revitalise the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority infrastructure at a cost of US$1.4 billion, of which the initial investment will be $1.1 billion, and $238 million will be reinvestments.
The scope of work will include the following, among others: rehabilitation of the track from Dar-es-Salaam to new Kapiri Mposhi and the major workshops, maintenance of the existing line and the purchase of thirty- four (34) new locomotives, sixteen (16) passenger coaches and seven hundred and sixty (760) wagons.
Speaking when he met CRCC Chairman Dai Hegen yesterday afternoon at the Corporation’s headquarters, Minister of Transport and Logistics Museba Frank Tayali said the government will do everything possible to support the project so that it is not delayed.
Mr Tayali said Zambians were anxious to see TAZARA revitalised and, in turn, derive economic benefits from the asset.
He commended CRCC for pledging to use the local labour force and maintain the green construction model during the process.
And speaking earlier, Mr Dai said CRCC and its partners have plans to develop industrial parks along the TAZARA corridor.
Mr Dai said CRCC also had an interest in investing in other projects, such as the Chipata to Serenje Railway Line and the Zambia Railways Kapiri Mposhi to Ndola Line.
