Gauteng Sets Out Transport Priorities in 2026 State of the Province Address
On 24 February 2026, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi delivered the 2026 State of the Province Address at Nasrec in Johannesburg, marking the third address of the 7th Administration of the Government of Provincial Unity.
Reflecting on the commitments made in the 2025 address, the Premier reported back on progress in advancing socio-economic transformation across the province. Transport infrastructure and connectivity featured prominently in the address.
Gauteng Air Access
In support of international tourism growth, Gauteng set a target of opening four new air routes during the current financial year. To date, three routes have been secured: FlyGabon, Qantas Airlines and United Airlines. These routes provide access to three strategic markets, namely Central Africa, North America and Australasia.
Transnet and LNG Import Terminal
Addressing energy security concerns linked to a potential reduction in gas supply from Sasol, Transnet has entered into a partnership to construct and operate South Africa’s first Liquefied Natural Gas import terminal at the Port of Richards Bay. The terminal will enable gas to be transported from Richards Bay to Gauteng for the first time.
A converted pipeline will make imported gas available to industrial users across Gauteng. According to the Premier, this intervention is aimed at stimulating economic activity in the province.
Integrated Transport Master Plan
The Premier welcomed the adoption of the Integrated Transport Master Plan, which shifts planning towards implementation. The plan is structured around corridor-based investment and stronger integration between rail, bus, taxi and non-motorised transport.
Gautrain Expansion
The Premier noted that in 2012, R27 billion was secured from the private market to build the Gautrain. By the end of March this year, the private sector will hand over the R52 billion infrastructure, which will be fully owned by the people of Gauteng.
To maximise this investment, the province will later this year resume the process to expand the Gautrain to Soweto, Mamelodi, Springs, Atteridgeville, Fourways, parts of the West Rand and Sedibeng. The concessionaire for the Gautrain expansion for the next 15 years is being finalised.
Gauteng–Limpopo Provincial Rail Link
The proposed Gauteng–Limpopo high speed train has attracted interest from more than 30 investors willing to fund the project. With the support of the President and the Minister of Transport, the Premier indicated that the project is progressing.
The proposed rail link is intended to ease traffic congestion on the N1 corridor to Limpopo, particularly during weekends, and to contribute to reducing accidents along the route.
