Gabon Secures More Than 1.6 Trillion FCFA From Afreximbank to Boost Its Mining and Energy Sectors

  • Development of local manganese processing facilities
  • Increase in national energy production capacity
  • Construction of a new railway line
  • Strategic focus on harnessing and developing Gabon’s natural resources

The first agreement, a $3 billion loan (approximately 1,600 billion CFA francs), aims to finance strategic infrastructure. This includes the development of local manganese processing, the increase in national energy production, and the construction of a new railway line, all with the aim of developing Gabonese natural resources.

In addition, €200 million (112 billion CFA francs) has been specifically allocated for the construction of three power plants. These future installations in Libreville, Port-Gentil, and Lambaréné will increase the country’s electricity capacity by 300 megawatts, a crucial step in supporting sustainable and competitive industrialization.

The signing of these agreements was carried out by a government delegation including Mr. Henri-Claude Oyima (Minister of State, Economy, Finance, Debt and Participations), Mr. Gilles Nembé (Minister of Mines and Geological Resources), Mr. Philippe Tonangoye (Minister of Universal Access to Water and Energy), and Ms. Louise Ovono (Minister of Planning and Foresight).

This funding comes at an opportune time, just before strategic mining deposits such as Belinga and Baniaka are set to begin production. Infrastructure investments will directly facilitate the local manganese processing schedule, which is scheduled to become operational in January 2029.

These agreements embody President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguéma’s strategic vision for the industrial transformation of mineral resources. They are a key lever for Gabon’s economic diversification and strengthening its energy autonomy.
