Final Stage of Railway Track Installation Underway on Algeria’s Oued Yser Bridge, One of the World’s Tallest

Located in the eastern part of Tlemcen Province. The Oued Yser bridge stands among the tallest railway bridges in the world and is considered the largest engineering structure within the 132 km-long high-speed (LGV) dual-electrified railway project connecting Oran, Sidi Bel Abbès, and Tlemcen.

The massive steel bridge stretches 1,890 meters in length, soaring to a height of 130 meters, including a 13-meter-high platform and steel girders alone—equivalent to a four-story building. The bridge is supported by tower-like reinforced concrete pillars, deeply anchored 26 meters underground with a 30-meter diameter, ensuring resilience against wind and seismic activity.

The bridge is equipped with an automated maintenance system and specialized sensors installed on its surface to monitor wind speed and seismic activity, allowing for real-time adjustments to train speeds based on system data.

Given its exceptional design and engineering complexity, several international research centres contributed to the bridge’s studies, including the Joint University Research Center for Building Aerodynamics and Wind Engineering in Florence, Italy, and the Research Center at Nova University in Lisbon, Portugal, alongside numerous civil engineering professors and experts.
