Uganda To Refurbish Kampala-Malaba Railway Line To Reduce Transport Costs And Improve Trade Competitiveness

The African Development Bank has loaned the Ugandan government to finance the EAC Railway Rehabilitation Support Project, which will refurbish the Kampala-Malaba Meter Gauge Railway Line. The project aims to reduce transport costs on the Northern Corridor and contribute to the improvement of trade competitiveness in Uganda and the East African region. The project includes multiple components, including track rehabilitation, installation of signals and telecommunications, rolling stock, machinery, and marine vessels, rail sector skills development, trade facilitation and institutional support, gender and social infrastructure, support to project management, climate change and resilience building, and compensation and resettlement. Procurement of goods, works, and consultancy services will follow the African Development Bank’s Procurement Policy for Bank Group Funded Operations. Interested bidders can obtain further information by contacting the Head of Procurement and Disposal Unit at the Uganda Railways Corporation. Bidding documents are expected to be available in March 2023, and methods of procurement will include open competitive bidding, quality and cost-based selection, least-cost selection, and individual consultant services.
