DMU’s Interurban Passenger Transport Service Commences on the Lobito-Benguela Railway
The interurban passenger transport service between the cities of Benguela and Lobito has officially begun on Tuesday, May 16, 2023. The launch of this service follows the completion of necessary station elevation works and the installation of fixed ramps to facilitate passenger access to the automatic doors of these modern trains, similar to those in Luanda.
Referred to as DMU’s (Diesel Multiple Units), each train consists of four vehicles with a total capacity of 696 passengers. This includes 190 seated and 506 standing passengers. The trains are capable of reaching speeds of up to 100 kilometres per hour, significantly reducing the travel distance of just over 30 kilometres between Benguela and Lobito to approximately 30 minutes. The ticket price for this service is 150 kwanzas.
During the inauguration ceremony held at the Benguela Railway Station, Antonio Manuel Cabral, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the CFB (Caminho de Ferro de Benguela), expressed his belief that the introduction of these modern DMU trains marks a significant leap in the quality of interurban rail transportation from Benguela to Lobito and vice versa. He emphasized the technical and operational achievements that have made this service possible.
The introduction of the DMU’s Interurban Passenger Transport Service on the Lobito-Benguela Railway promises enhanced convenience and efficiency for commuters travelling between Benguela and Lobito. With modern amenities and improved travel times, this service is set to contribute to the development of the railway sector in Angola and provide a more comfortable experience for passengers.
