CRCC to Supply Steel Rails for Morocco’s High-Speed Railway Extension
China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) has secured a landmark contract to supply steel rails for Morocco’s Kenitra–Marrakech high-speed rail extension, marking the debut of Chinese high-speed rail steel exports to the African continent.
Morocco, home to Africa’s first operational high-speed rail line, is expanding its network ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The new section requires 60,000 tonnes of 60E1 specification, R260Mn steel rails—manufactured to European standards. CRCC’s winning bid beat out five competitors from Spain, Italy, and other European nations.
This project marks China’s first large-scale production and export of high-speed railway-grade steel to Africa. CRCC is delivering a full-package solution, covering design, manufacturing, storage, port logistics, and shipping. Production is already underway, with deliveries scheduled through 2026.
Once operational in 2029, the extended line will significantly reduce travel times—cutting the journey from Tangier to Casablanca to 1 hour and 40 minutes, and offering a direct 35-minute connection between Rabat and Casablanca Airport. The project is expected to strengthen national connectivity and support Morocco’s broader economic growth and transport development goals.
