CRCC Breaks Ground on Algiers Metro Extension – Its First Metro Project in Algeria
Construction has commenced on the extension of Algiers’ Metro Line 1, following a groundbreaking ceremony held on 15 July 2025. The 9.575km expansion—connecting El Harrach to Houari Boumediene International Airport—marks the first metro project in Algeria to be delivered by a Chinese enterprise as general contractor.
The project is being executed by a joint venture between China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) and local Algerian state-owned enterprises. It will include nine underground stations and cover system integration, station finishing, escalator installation, and track construction.
This strategic extension forms part of Algeria’s broader urban transport infrastructure plan aimed at alleviating traffic congestion and improving mobility in the capital. It will provide direct access between key residential zones, the university district, business hubs, and the international airport—enhancing commuter experience and connectivity across Algiers.
The project further strengthens CRCC’s role in Algeria’s infrastructure development and demonstrates China’s growing contribution to major urban transport systems across the African continent.
