Cornelder de Moçambique Expands Port of Beira Capacity with New STS Cranes

Cornelder de Moçambique (CdM) has signed an agreement to acquire two new high-capacity Ship-to-Shore cranes for the Port of Beira Container Terminal, marking a further step in strengthening port operations and capacity. The US$25 million contract, signed on 14 December 2025 during an official visit by President Daniel Chapo, includes approximately US$5 million for additional equipment. The cranes will be supplied by Chinese manufacturer SANY and are custom-built to order.

The crane acquisition forms part of CdM’s broader port modernisation and expansion programme, under which the company plans to invest between US$120 million and US$125 million in the coming years. These investments are intended to raise container terminal capacity to around 700,000 TEUs per year and general cargo capacity to approximately five million tonnes.

Since assuming management of the Port of Beira in 1998, Cornelder de Moçambique has contributed about US$886 million to Mozambique’s State Treasury, including roughly US$500 million over the past eight years. The company also channels an average of US$50 million annually to local suppliers and service providers, supporting domestic businesses.

Ongoing works include yard expansions, new entry and exit complexes, mineral terminal expansion, and additional facilities for fertiliser handling, alongside the acquisition of new mobile cranes and bulk handling systems. CdM continues to invest in skills development, training local professionals and developing in-house operational and digital solutions tailored to the Port of Beira.
