Chipata-Mchinji Rail Line To Move Forward

Train operations on the Nacala Corridor, an essential trade route for Zambia, were previously suspended in 2016 due to washaways in Malawi. The corridor stretches 1,150km from Chipata to the Port of Nacala, with the Zambian portion covering 24km from Chipata to Mchinji.

The Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) Board of Directors, led by Board Chairperson Emmanuel Hachipuka, conducted a familiarisation tour of the Chipata-Mchinji railway line. During a courtesy call on the Provincial Administration, Mr Hachipuka emphasised the Board and Government’s commitment to resuming train operations on the Nacala Corridor once existing challenges are addressed.

The Board’s physical inspection aimed to assess the current state of the rail line and explore ways to advance the project. Mr Hachipuka highlighted the need for funding, suggesting that the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) could source funds or consider a Public Private Partnership (PPP) to revitalise the rail line. He stressed that the operation of the Zambian rail line is contingent on the functionality of the Malawian section, making a comprehensive approach essential.

Mr Hachipuka also mentioned that President Hakainde Hichilema and his government are keen on developing this line, along with other projects like the Lobito Corridor. The Board has formulated a Strategic Business Plan (SBP) to guide ZRL’s operations for the next five years, focusing on savings and reinvestments.

Eastern Province Health Director Dr. Matthews Ng’ambi, representing the Provincial Permanent Secretary, acknowledged the crucial role of the rail sector in transporting heavy and bulk cargo, which helps decongest roads and reduce accidents.
