CAMRAIL Strengthens Its Technical Self-Reliance in Locomotive Compressor Maintenance

CAMRAIL has taken a further step in the development of its industrial capabilities by now carrying out all maintenance operations on the compressors fitted to General Electric locomotives in-house. This achievement has been made possible thanks to the upskilling of the teams at the Bassa central workshops in Douala, who have designed and manufactured internally the tools required for the disassembly and reassembly of these complex components.

Until now, only pneumatic operations were performed locally, while the electrical section was entrusted to General Electric in the United States. This shift marks a strategic move towards greater autonomy for CAMRAIL in the management of its railway equipment.

CAMRAIL already has recognised expertise in the general overhaul of several types of compressors, including Garden Denver units for CC2500 locomotives, Knorr-Bremse for BB1100, WBO for CC3300 and CC3300 DC, and Wabtec-Wabco for CC2200.

This skills enhancement not only reduces turnaround times, but also delivers significant savings, estimated at between 20 and 25 million FCFA per compressor serviced locally.

“This technical milestone is a concrete illustration of our determination to strengthen CAMRAIL’s industrial self-reliance while fully harnessing local expertise. It is fully in line with our vision of a more agile, higher-performing company resolutely committed to operational excellence,” stated Joel Hounsinou, Managing Director of CAMRAIL.

CAMRAIL thus reaffirms its commitment to strengthening its industrial capabilities, optimising its operating costs and ensuring a high level of technical performance in support of railway transport in Cameroon.
