Botswana Railways Trials Direct Cross-Border Freight Trains from SA to Gaborone
The Botswana Railways Board and Management have announced the launch of a temporary trial of through-working freight trains from South Africa into Gaborone. Commencing on 19 May 2026, the strategic initiative is designed to address current fleet challenges, particularly locomotive availability, while reducing operational inefficiencies and transit delays, and improving customer satisfaction and retention.
By enabling the direct movement of freight trains across the border without intermediate transhipment, the trial streamlines operations, shortens lead times and increases the organisation’s capacity to move more traffic reliably and efficiently. The initiative removes the need for costly and time-consuming storage previously required at Mafikeng, ending an avoidable expense and reducing dwell times for customer consignments. It also improves transparency and predictability in transit schedules, supporting better planning for shippers and end customers.
The trial is temporary and focused on testing operational readiness, identifying process improvements and confirming the value of through-working services for longer-term adoption. BR will closely monitor performance metrics, including transit times, on-time deliveries, locomotive utilisation, dwell times and customer feedback, to inform decisions about scaling the solution and optimising cross-border rail operations. Reciprocal movements into South Africa will be trialled in the near future.
