Botswana Railways Commits to Transparency and Operational Stability
On 25 November, the Botswana Railways (BR) Board, Executive Management and officials from the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure hosted a media engagement at Gaborone Station to share updates on the organisation’s operational environment and the actions underway to restore stability.
BR Board Chairperson Mrs Wincey Ramaphoi highlighted the current financial and operational pressures, including constraints on rolling stock availability arising from ongoing maintenance requirements. She reaffirmed that prioritising maintenance and procurement is central to improving efficiency and service delivery.
The presence of ministry representatives underscored the Government’s support for the organisation’s recovery efforts. Deputy Permanent Secretary Mr Johannes Tsimako noted that the Ministry remains committed to working closely with Botswana Railways to ensure alignment on key decisions and reforms.
The Board emphasised that BR’s immediate focus is on stabilising operations, strengthening governance, and reinforcing accountability across the organisation. Transparent communication with stakeholders continues to be a priority.
BR reiterated that reliable rolling stock and consistent operational management are fundamental to service improvement. Fleet assessments and prioritisation exercises are currently underway.
Strengthening Botswana Railways remains critical not only for the organisation’s future but also for the wider logistics system. Rail transport continues to play an essential role in supporting freight movement, infrastructure development and regional connectivity.
