Another Sabotage and Theft of Rail Fasteners Lead to Derailment
In just over a month, ArcelorMittal Liberia reports that the Yekepa ─ Buchanan railway has suffered another sabotage due to the theft of rail ties and fasteners, resulting in a derailment on the track. While no injuries or fatalities were recorded, ArcelorMittal Liberia is alarmed at the wave of such criminal activities that continue to impact its operations. Swift recovery and repair efforts of the rail track are ongoing by engineers of the company. The incident happened in the early morning hours of Monday, October 2, 2023, around Kilometer 184, in Nimba County. ArcelorMittal Liberia’s railway operations have suffered many similar attacks and sabotage by criminals who remove rail sleepers and fasteners thereby posing huge risks of accidents on the track. The incident as well as others in the past have been reported to the Liberia National Police (LNP). The management of ArcelorMittal Liberia condemns in the strongest terms, these constant criminal attacks on its operations and has called for the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.
