Angola’s Minister of Transport Talks Zambia–Lobito Rail and Shares Update on Angola’s Corridor Developments

At the Land-Linked Zambia Conference & Exhibition, hosted in collaboration with the Zambian Ministry of Transport and Logistics, Railways Africa Editor Phillippa Dean spoke with Angola’s Minister of Transport, Ricardo Viegas D’Abreu, following the signing of two bilateral agreements between Zambia and Angola, witnessed by the Zambian President, His Excellency Hakainde Hichilema.

Specifically, the landmark Memorandum of Understanding on the Zambia–Lobito Railway, which will create a critical rail link between the Port of Lobito and Zambia, positioning Zambia as a key transit hub with extended reach to TAZARA, Beira, Durban, and beyond. Minister D’Abreu described this as a strategic, generational project with strong support from both governments and backing from partners such as the European Union, the US, the Africa Finance Corporation, and African DFIs.

The second agreement, aligned with the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM), paves the way for open skies between Angola and Zambia, with the goal of launching commercial passenger and cargo air services by Q3 2025.

The Minister also shares updates on Angola’s broader transport corridor strategy, including progress on the Lobito, Namibe, and Northern rail corridors, and the construction of the deepwater port in Caio, Cabinda, to strengthen regional integration with the DRC and the Republic of Congo.

Watch to get the whole story!
